 Project Objectives:

1. Delivery of multiple disease resistant germplasm to Australia, emphasising useful sources of resistance for key root diseases in high yielding Australian and CIMMYT backgrounds.

2. Understanding of the useability of current and new sources of root disease resistance from the 'Root Disease Resistance Nursery' developed by screening in different regions of Australia and internationally.

After quarantining and seed increase, seed is sent out to interested Australian breeders and pathologists with the electronic seed list and trait information, MTA and guidelines on how to receive and treat materials.

Progress

  • Lines sent to AWCC in December 2006 included Root Rot and Nematode nurseries:
    • RRNEMAUS SW 0607 1-28, 20g - Spring Bread Wheat
    • RNEMGL WW 0607 1-25, 20g - Winter Bread Wheat
    • RRDUR SW 0607 1-14, 20g - Spring Durum Wheat
    • RRDUR WW 0607 1-6, 20g - Winter Durum Wheat? These were seed increased by AWCC.
  • For 2006, 86 lines were sent to AACC in Tamworth to be put through quarantine in late December 2005. The level of redundancy with lines already in Australia and/or seed-increased was assessed and the nursery list was finalised.
  • 151 lines were distributed in 2003 and 81 lines in 2005.

Nurseries distributed nationally and internationally in May 2006:

1st RRNEMA -

1st Root Rot Nematode Australia - a nursery targeted to breeders with advanced lines with good yield, phenotype and confirmed root disease resistance (see linked file for trait data).

1st RDRN -

1st Root Disease Resistance Nursery - a nursery targeted to pathologists to screen for specific root disease resistance (or other). Objective is to identify the most resistant parental sources to prioritize breeding objectives (see linked file for trait data). The 1st RDRN had problems with seed increase in 2005-2006 at AWCC and Gatton (CSIRO). The nursery was distributed to international collaborators in May 2006, but only for GH screening, due to seed limitation. A further seed increase is underway with AGT (Meiqin Lu), and based on GH data from 2006-2007 seed, 1st RDRN for field trials may be distributed.
