From 2008 onwards AWCC receive and process shipments from CIMMYT and ICARDA.

The 2009 CIMMYT shipment cleared AQIS, arriving at AWCC in 23/12/ 2008. The nurseries were quarantined at the AWCC and SARDI . Quarantined seed (704 lines) was supplied to Australian Grains Technologies, Narrabri (on behalf of LongReach Plant Breeders and Plant Breeding Institute) and Intergrain, Wongan Hills in early June 2009. A small subset was sent to PBI, Cobbitty for rust testing.

The 2009 ICARDA shipment cleared AQIS, arriving at AWCC on24/11/2008. The seed was cold treated to overcome vernalisation effects and the seed distributed ( 114 lines) as per the CIMMYT material.

Material Transfer Agreements

Seed imported after 1 January 2007 is subject to the Standard Material Transfer Agreement (sMTA) associated with the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture, and use confers obligations to feed information back to the provider, and to pay a royalty on any line commercialised. The Treaty covers all of Australia’s major grain crops, among 35 food and 29 forage crops.

For more detailed information, and to download the sMTA, see:

Seed imported prior to 1 January 2007 is covered by the GRDC-CIMMYT MTA, which is inclusive of all Australian breeding programs. MTAs are prepared for all transfers of CIMMYT seed in this suite of projects, and require that trial data be communicated to CIMMYT.
