Evaluation of CIMMYT and ICARDA wheat germplasm in Australia What lines are evaluated? At a minimum, the following material is evaluated under the CAIGE project. From CIMMYT, the bread wheat nurseries: the Elite Spring Wheat and Semi-Arid Wheat Yield Trials; and the International Durum Wheat Nursery. From ICARDA, germplasm representing their complete breeding program are imported. In addition, breeder selected lines (c.a. 100) identified during breeder visits to the two centres in alternate years. What happens to the lines? They undergo quarantine (managed by AWCC) and seed increase, prior to national distribution for evaluation. Rust screening of all material occurs at the Plant Breeding Institute, Cobbitty. How long does it take? The material is imported in October/November and released from quarantine the following May/June. Following a seed increase the material is available for trial evaluation 14 months after it is imported. Where is the data stored? All data (agronomic, disease scores and genotypic) collated in Australia and provided by the two CGIAR centres are made available on this website and via a user-friendly web-delivered ICIS database framework for the data (the Global Wheat Information System, GWIS). GWIS is being developed in collaboration with IRRI. What genotyping data is available? A knowledge management initiative of the Coordination project is to DArT® whole-genome profile those of the incoming lines that are trialled or phenotyped, so that traits can be tracked in derived lines. One development in GWIS is a high-throughput genotyping module to manage these data. Satellite projects Data and information for other GRDC funded CIMMYT or ICARDA projects are encouraged to use the CAIGE platform for dissemination of information.
